Dirt Track Thinking
Wimbledon 2025 concludes in a few hours.
The new school are taking over in the Men’s game.
Over the last few decades we have been treated to watching the three greatest male players of all time competed simultaneously: Nadal, Djokovic, and Federer.
Matthew Syed tells a remarkable story of watching them warm up before Wimbledon.
When Nadal warmed up, it was all physical. Pure aggression. With his biceps bulging, he sprinted up and down like a man possessed, his shirt dripping in sweat.
When Djokovic warmed up, he was emotionless and fearless - measured and calculated in everything he did.
When Federer warmed up, you could sense his enjoyment. You could hear his laughter - an almost child-like approach to trick shots, a youthful curiosity and exuberance.
There is no one right way of doing things.
There is an abundance of 'expertise' and 'know how' out there. Too much, you could argue.
This is where self-awareness comes into play.
We need to be conscious of what we absorb. We need to be aware that their context isn't the same as our context.
Here's one question to bear in mind the next time you see someone sharing their experience.
"Why would this work for me?"
Always extract the elements that play to your strengths.
Your strengths are different to others, in the same way the 3 tennis goats warmed up in their own styles.
