Okay, disclaimer, this is not new. This is a reminder.

But a very important reminder.

You need to have cups before you have Halloween balloons.

We’re talking about Starbucks coffee. β˜•

A franchise recently had a beautifully decorated store, with cobwebs, orange balloons, and plenty of promotion for their Halloween flavoured beverages. πŸŽƒ

There was one small issue: they had no coffee cups in stock. The decorations are all pointless if you cannot provide the market what they want. The market wants overpriced, blast roasted, high sugar caffeinated drinks on the go.

The franchise owners had gotten so focussed on ordering the Halloween decorations, they had neglected making sure they had enough coffee cups.

In the L&D world, there’s plenty of Halloween balloons.

Fancy presentations, state-of-the-art digital tools, workshops without engagement, complicated ROI strategy to name a few. These can be nice add-ons to the fundamentals.

A drumbeat engagement plan, intentionally designed experiences and relentless focus on the outcome of the programme are the building blocks that allow the extras to flourish.
