1. Tell Me Something New

Since our very own Dr Adrienne Milner sat on the panel in front of 1600 passionate leaders and change makers at D&I in Grocery LIVE! a week ago, we thought we’d ask her for her top three takeaways from the day 👇

1) Similar to other sectors, the grocery industry has been successful in promoting awareness of D&I issues; the goal now is to track progress and ensure accountability. This shift can be achieved through assessing the outcomes of D&I initiatives as well as how effective leaders are at achieving D&I.

2) Each company should think creatively about how to accelerate change that is meaningful for their organisation. Bacardi galvanises support for D&I progress by issue (e.g., menopause policy) rather than assuming certain employee resource groups (ERGs) would be invested in that issue (e.g., women's ERG, older workers ERG). This expands the pool of potential employees who may want to be involved in addressing the issue.

3) Seek external advisors to support your D&I journey. Reckitt partners with researchers to understand the potential impact of their products. For instance, how washing detergent may impact a neurodivergent person experiencing sensory sensitivity related to clothing, thus, elevating D&I results both internally and externally.

Bonus: Despite progress, the majority of companies aren't significantly moving the D&I needle; we need to continue unthinking D&I.

Our Director of DEI and Insights, Dr Adrienne Milner, would be happy to to discuss your organisations approach and share industry best practice across DEI 🤝 Click here to drop her an email.

2. Dirt Track Mindset

Re-framing the problem…

A case from history was “The Son of Sam”: A NY Serial Killer from 1976-1977.

The NYPD threw unlimited resources at this case with no luck.

Instead of doing what all the other officers were doing and looking at the crime scene, one officer started looking for parking tickets in the areas of the murders over the last year.

The idea was that no serial killer would stop mid-way through murder to pay for parking.

They found a Ford Galaxie had received a parking ticket on every night there was a murder.

When detectives went to the murderer’s home, he admitted on the spot and said:

“What took you so long?”.

Re-framing the problem will encourage different solutions.
